Shot in the remote, rugged and moody Hokianga, this is the debut feature for Armagan Ballantyne and certainly marks her as a director to keep a beady eye on.

The location becomes a character in itself, dominating and ultimately dictating the film's flavour and impact.

It's a story of childhood, family, love, and loss, and if you're in the right mood, is a worthy watch.

The two young lead actors took a little while to settle into their roles, but once they did, this film flowed gently across the senses.

Three and a half stars.
