White teeth: The ultimate celebrity accessory

What do Kelly Ripa, Bon Jovi and Britney Spears all have in common? Besides being popular entertainers they've also got really bright teeth.

Dr. Jeff Golub-Evans in New York City says pearly whites are the ultimate fashion accessory these days:

"If we think of models, beauty pageant queens, Sarah Palin, talk show hosts, news anchors and more and more just regular folk walking down the street white teeth have become a fashion accessory. It's something that's become a must-have."

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry recently released an annual survey of celebrity smiles.

The association voted Angelina Jolie as having the "sexiest celebrity female smile" and Kelly Ripa as having the "sweetest celebrity female smile."

The AACD also voted Clive Owen as the male celebrity with the sexiest smile, and Jake Gyllenhaal as having the most innocent male celebrity smile.

As for the couple with the best smiles...that distinction goes to reality TV stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt of 'The Hills.'

"Heidi does have very white teeth and Spencer's father is a dentist so he probably hooked her up a little bit with some whitening treatments," says Amy Palmer of OK! Magazine.

One way to have a bright, white smile like your favourite star is to get your teeth professionally whitened.

It can cost between $250-$1,000 a session.

Dr. Golub-Evans says his practice even offers a "lunchtime-lightening" treatment that can remove 3-to-5 shades of stain.

Someone who knows all about it is Joe Biden - as Amy Palmer explains:

"He's my favourite people to talk about with teeth because he has his own website devoted just to his teeth. It's called joebidensteeth.com and it gives you tips on how you can have bright, white, movie star teeth."

There are also over the counter whitening products available - and even a blue tinted lip gloss that is marketed to make your teeth appear whiter.

But if you want to see if a celeb has been treating their pearly whites - Dr. Golub-Evans has this tip:

"Don't be fooled by magazines. Look at the whites of the eyes of celebrities. If the whites of their eyes are darker than their teeth then their teeth have been covered with bonding or porcelain veneers. One cannot bleach teeth any lighter than the whites of one's eyes."
