Iconic broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough has warned that humanity must curb its growing population, or face dire consequences.

“Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now,” he told Britain’s Radio Times.

“We are a plague on the Earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so,” he said. “It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde.”

Attenborough launches a new television series next week – David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities – in which he explores some of nature’s evolutionary anomalies.

But while he’s clearly still fascinated with the natural world, he says he’s pessimistic about humanity’s ability to continue to thrive in it.

“Until humanity manages to sort itself out and get a co-ordinated view about the planet it’s going to get worse and worse."
