The four-time 400m hurdles national champion qualified for the Gold Coast with a 49.33sec performance at the ACT championships in Canberra in January, a run that sees him ranked fifth in the Commonwealth so far this year.

In 2017, he was ranked 24th with 49.84s.

French has been a consistent performer at national level for several years and has also established himself as one of the country’s quickest men, clocking 10.51sec over 100 metres three years ago.

Probably his best international performance came that same year, when he cracked 50sec over the one-lap hurdles for the first time, finishing fifth at the World University Games in South Korea.
