Sam O'Dea and brother Ben created history, when they became the first NZ men's beach volleyball team to compete at the Commonwealth Games, winning bronze at Gold Coast 2018.

The grandsons of former All Black Bob O'Dea has also won bronze at the 2017 Shepparton Open, part of the beach volleyball world tour, but fell agonisingly short in their bid to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

That disappointment sparked a new approach for Birmingham, with the brothers ending their partnership to chase the one available spot with different teammates.

Ultimately, Sam and new partner Brad Fuller have taken the berth, after winning the Australian Beach Tour Championship in March.
