Birmingham Commonwealth Games: Hayden Wilde claims silver in men's triathlon for New Zealand's first medal

Hayden Wilde has claimed New Zealand's first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, after taking a silver medal in the men's individual triathlon at Birmingham.

After winning Olympic bronze in Tokyo last year, Wilde finished second behind 2021 silver medallist Alex Yee of England, who took first place in his home Commonwealth Games.

Wilde can be forgiven for feeling hard done by, after he was hit with a penalty, after unclipping his helmet early when transitioning from the bike to the run.

But despite the penalty, Wilde still fell behind Yee during the run stage, and took the silver medal, as Australia's Matthew Hauser finished third.

"I think it's unfair what they did there but that's racing at the end of the day," Wilde said after the race."You've got to be happy about that."

Fellow Kiwis Dylan McCullough and Tayler Reid finished seventh and eighth respectively.
