Blockbuster animated film Minions is currently at the top of New Zealand's school holiday box office chart, but parents may be uncomfortable with some ways the cute characters are being used.

A McDonald's range of talking Minions toys in the US allegedly includes them using bad language.

In a video posted online by father Paul Butts, one of the toys appears to say "f**k".

Pierre Coffin, director of the Despicable Me movies and co-creator of the Minionese language, says the toys aren't swearing.

"If it was my intent to say inappropriate stuff, you'd hear it, I promise you," he told Mic.com.

"But I'd be pretty stupid doing it in a movie for all audiences including kids. I don't think of myself as being very intelligent, but I'm certainly not that dumb."

Meanwhile, another story hit the internet today claiming that Kotex Puerto Rico had produced a range of Minions tampons.

MetroUK tweeted the following:

This brand integration doesn't exist. A spokesperson for Kimberly-Clark, makers of Kotex, stated: "This is not an authentic Kotex promotion and we have removed it from social media to avoid confusion amongst our consumers."
