It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney is set to make his directorial feature film debut with the live-action movie adaptation of cult video game Minecraft.

The actor, who also co-created and executive produces the long-running US TV comedy series, has been named the director for the highly-anticipated film based on the Mojang AB building game.

Officials at the company made the announcement on Tuesday, by posting a photo of McElhenney on their website and adding a statement which read: "Hello there! Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MineCon (Minecraft convention) in London a couple weeks ago. He's Rob McElhenney, and he's going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie."

While McElhenney has previously directed a few episodes of It's Always Sunny and an upcoming TV movie, the project will mark his first major film as a director.

He replaces Night at the Museum filmmaker Shawn Levy, who dropped out of the movie due to creative differences in December.
