Filmmaker Chris Columbus has warned fans a sequel to cult classic The Goonies is a long way off as movie bosses don't want to rush the project and mess up the beloved franchise.
Plans for a follow-up to the hit 1985 comedy adventure were revealed last year when director Richard Donner claimed the movie was in development, and although original child stars Corey Feldman and Sean Austin have expressed their interest in reprising their roles, few other details have been made public.
Now Columbus, who served as the original screenwriter for The Goonies, admits he is still heavily involved, but progress will be slow as producers continue the search for the perfect script.
The Home Alone director tells HuffPost Live, "There are a lot of writers who are interested in writing Goonies, but we're very protective because it's such a well-loved movie.
"The Goonies have aged 30 years, so there was a magic about that particular cast. How do you make it work now? That's a difficult challenge."
The 1985 film also featured child stars Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and Jonathan Ke Quan.
