Christian Louboutin to expand empire

Luxury shoe designer Christian Louboutin is expanding his empire by venturing into the world of cosmetics.

The inventor of the famous red-soled shoes has unveiled a lipstick line inspired by Queen Nefertiti of Egypt and the Art Deco movement.

The collection will feature 38 shades in three distinct textures: Silky Satin, Velvet Matte and Sheer Voile. Each piece comes in luxurious cone-shaped vials that can be used as a pendant.

The lipsticks launch in September at Saks Fifth Avenue in the US and will retail for US$90 a piece, which is nearly three times the price of Dior's iconic Rouge Dior No. 999 collection.

Although steep, Louboutin Rouge's retail price is still a far cry from Guerlain's KissKiss Gold and Diamond lipstick's US$62,000 price tag. The world famous beauty product is cloaked in 110 grams of 18-karat gold and is studded with diamonds.

The lipstick launch isn't the first attempt Louboutin has taken to expand into beauty. Last year, the Parisian brand introduced a nail polish collection, with a similar categorising system: The Nudes, The Pops and The Noirs.
