Downton Abbey has teased fans with a promotional photo of the sixth and final series, which is due to air in September.

The TV drama about the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and the servants that work for them is finally coming to a close, with the last episode planned to air on Christmas Day 2015.

Since its first episode aired in 2010, Downton Abbey has become the most Emmy-nominated British show in history, with 59 to date. The show won 11 Emmys, including Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries or a Movie, Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries or a Movie and Outstanding Miniseries or Movie.

It has also taken home three Golden Globes, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, three BAFTAs and three National Television Awards for Best Drama.

With 11 million viewers over the course of five series, the British show is the highest-rating UK drama of the past decade across any channel.

The cast have been spending their last days of filming documenting their special moments on social media, under the hashtag #LastDaysofDownton.

Although there are no plans to make a spinoff, according to executive producer Gareth Neame, there have been rumblings of a Downton Abbey movie.

"It is definitely something we're contemplating. It would be great fun to do. I think it would be a wonderful extension of everything that people loved about the TV show, but I can't confirm that it's definitely going to happen," says Neame.
