Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker is heading to Broadway for the first time to star in a new adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play Hughie.

The Last King of Scotland star will take on the role of hustler Erie Smith in the play - a role originated by Jason Robards in 1964 and revived by Ben Gazzara in 1975 and Al Pacino in 1996.

The stage play will debut next year with Michael Grandage directing, according to Variety.com.

Whitaker spoke about his desire to hit the New York stage earlier this year, explaining, "I'm talking to different producers right now to figure out what I might be able to do. I'm excited; when I was in college, that was my goal. I was just going to come to New York and do theatre, that was the whole thing, I wasn't going to do film at all.

"(However), I started working in film and as I started working the parts started to become more interesting to me, so I started getting caught up in that."
