Hugh Jackman has been trumped by Jim Carrey in their hilarious social media face-off.

It all kicked off when Jackman, 46, posted a video with app Dubsmash on Instagram. In the clip he took on Cartey's character in The Mask, uttering his famous "Smokin'!" catchphrase.

In response Carrey, 53, headed straight to Twitter, where he posted a picture of himself holding up a handful of cutlery, imitating Jackman's sharp metal claws as Wolverine.

And it seems Jackman is all out of comebacks, as he admitted defeat on Twitter today.

It's a shame for Jackman's fans, who were surely hoping he'd pull another hilarious impression out of the bag.

But maybe Katy Perry will kick off the next Twitter showdown, as Hugh also took on the 30-year-old singer via Dubsmash. In a clip, the actor mimed along to her catchy hit 'Teenage Dream', making fans giggle with his over-the-top facial expressions.

"Oh nothing much ... just singing along to @katyperry! Living a teenage dream!!," he captioned the Instagram video, tagging Katy in the process.

For now, Jackman is still in the iconic mutant role with X-Men: Apocalypse due out next year and an untitled Wolverine sequel following in 2017.

However, Wolverine 3 will be the last time he sharpens his claws.

"It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it… I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out," he said, breaking fans' hearts earlier this year.
