The Muppets stars Kermit and Miss Piggy have split after decades of dating on and off.

The puppet couple has released statements, confirming the sad news.

Miss Piggy took to her Facebook page and wrote: "After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe

"However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter... unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding."

Kermit added his comments during an appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour: "It's a day-by-day, moment-by-moment process. Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically. It can be tough to work with your ex. There will be an official statement released in the press. I don't want to betray anything."

Kermit and his ex and their fellow Muppets will return to the small screen for a new US TV series in September.
