Rebel Wilson questions US gun laws

Australian actress Rebel Wilson has added her support to the push for new gun laws in the United States after a horrific shooting at a Lafayette, Louisiana movie theatre.

The Pitch Perfect star took to Twitter to compare the incident to a similar act of violence in her home country.

"I don't remember a mass shooting in Australia since they overhauled the gun laws," she tweeted, referring to Australia's National Firearms Program Implementation Act, passed in the aftermath of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. The law banned semi-automatic and automatic rifles as well as shotguns.

The comic isn't the first person to defend Australia's strict gun laws. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama said: "When Australia had a mass killing, I think in Tasmania about 25 years ago it was just so shocking to the system that the whole country said, 'we're going to completely change our gun laws'. And they did, and it hasn't happened since."

Wilson, who used to be a lawyer before changing career paths, has received mixed reactions on Twitter.

The shooting during the Trainwreck screening in Louisiana left three people dead and nine people seriously injured.
