Wrestling icon-turned-actor Roddy Piper died of a pulmonary embolism, according to his death certificate.

The sportsman, real name Roderick George Toombs, passed away in July at the age of 61. Fans assumed his death was related to cancer, as Toombs was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2006, but he beat the disease and was completely cancer-free by 2014.

His death certificate, obtained by TMZ.com, shows Piper was battling hypertension, or abnormally high blood pressure, and he died after suffering cardiac arrest caused by a blood clot in his lungs.

Piper was a professional wrestler for 45 years and was one of the biggest stars in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) organisation. He took part in the very first WrestleMania event in 1985.
