A survivor of the ill-fated Everest expedition documented in a film starring Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaa, Keira Knightley, Josh Brolin and John Hawkes has accused the filmmakers of failing to tell the full story.

Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormákur and based on the tragic story of New Zealander Rob Hall's last climb in the 1996, a disaster which left a number of climbers dead.

Everest is based on Into Thin Air by survivor Jon Krakauer, who is played by Michael Kelly in the film, and he has now spoken out against the way his book has been depicted on the big screen.

He tells the Los Angeles Times, "It's total bull. Anyone who goes to that movie and wants a fact-based account should read Into Thin Air.

"People told me, 'Movies never get made.Take the money. What do you have to lose?' I curse myself for selling it (the book rights) at all. Dramatic films take dramatic licence, and when you sign a document, you can do whatever you want with me. It wasn't worth the money I got."

Baltasar Kormakur has addressed Krakauer's comments and insisted he was simply attempting to put together a balanced version of events.

He says, "The writers and I tried to look at things from a fair point of view without choosing sides."

Krakauer's book was previously turned into a 1997 TV movie titled Into Thin Air: Death on Everest.
