Festival honours Mad Max: Fury Road as year's best movie

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy

Mad Max: Fury Road has been named the best movie of the year by critics at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain.

The blockbuster reboot, starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, has been named the winner of the Grand Prix of the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) and director George Miller will pick up the special prize at the festival's opening gala on September 18.

He says of the honour, "You could have knocked me over with a feather! It's lovely to have this great cohort of critics acknowledge our collective labours in this way."

Last year's prize was given to Richard Linklater's Boyhood, which went on to earn six Academy Award nominations and the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Patricia Arquette.

The San Sebastian Film Festival runs from 18-26 September.
