Game of Thrones has earned a place in the 2016 Guinness Book of World Records as the TV series shown in the most countries around the world at the same time.

The second episode of the fifth series of the HBO fantasy show was broadcast simultaneously in 173 countries on April 20, beating the record set by US crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation which managed a figure of 171 just weeks before.

Actress Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's novels, collected the award on behalf of the cast and crew.

Williams says, "I'm so pleased for Game of Thrones to be a part of Guinness World Records, I'm going to tell my stepbrother as he gets the book every year for Christmas. I can't wait to see the look on his face!"

Other notable stars featured in the 2016 edition of the record breaking annual include One Direction, who have landed six Guinness World Records, and Ed Sheeran, whose single 'Thinking Out Loud' captured the record for taking the longest time to reach the number one spot on the UK singles chart after scaling to the top in 19 weeks.
