Mediaworks wants advertising restrictions scrapped

Mediaworks wants advertising restrictions to be scrapped, describing them as a burden on free to air television.

At the moment the company says its free-to-air channels TV3 and FOUR can't run premium content on Christmas Day, Anzac Day morning or on Good Friday and Easter Sunday because they're non-advertisement days and therefore not generating revenue for the company.

Its comments were made in submissions to a discussion paper by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage on the impact of convergence in the media sector.

Mediaworks says ending the advertising restrictions would allow the company to invest in more local content.

The company’s also calling for debate on the state-owned broadcaster model, its role and whether it’s still fit for purpose.

Submissions by Mediaworks and other interested parties can be read here: http://www.mch.govt.nz/Content-Regulation-Submissions
