Happy birthday Hilary

Today is Hilary Barry's birthday.

Yes, December 4 marks the birth one of New Zealand's favourite newsreaders (full disclosure: we work for the same company and we love her).

Hilary started at 3 News back in 1993 as a reporter in Christchurch, and through the years she has become a household name in New Zealand television.

Throughout the day plenty of people have been wishing her well on social media.

Sometimes referred to as the Aunty of the Nation, Hilary is one half of the 3 News at 6pm news team during the week, seated alongside Mike McRoberts.

Despite being bound for Lebanon, her co-host managed to send a little message.

"Happy birthday Hilary, you've had a fantastic year and as always it's been an absolute pleasure sitting next you xx."

Mike isn't the only person to have sat next to Hilary though. Sometimes he is away – like he is now, in Lebanon – and someone else has to fill that chair.

More often than not it is Simon Shepherd, and today he recalled the first time he met Hilary.

"She was Hilary Pankhurst, a 3 National News reporter. I was with TVNZ and we had both been sent to Pukekohe Court for a gang-related story. The patched members lined up outside court, jostling the camera operators, doing their best to intimidate.

"Hilary wasn't standing for it. That image is still fresh - the small statured reporter toe- to-toe with some towering gang members. Was she put off the story? You know the answer. Still going strong Hilary – many happy returns!”

From the rest of us here at 3 News, we would like to extend a big happy Birthday to you too Hilary. Thanks for helping make the newsroom such a lovely place to work.
