Star Wars breaks $1B box office record

Star Wars: The Force Awakens appears to have lived up to the hype, smashing the $1 billion mark faster than any other film in history.

The box office giant has definitely been awakened, with the seventh film in the franchise capturing the Christmas holiday audiences.

It reached the milestone just 12 days after its global release and is a day earlier than the previous record holder Jurassic World set earlier this year.

In its first 10 days of its release, it became the fifth-biggest film in US box office history, CNN reports.

In comparison, it took twice as long for Disney and Marvel's latest juggernaut Avengers: Age of Ultron to reach the same $1 billion mark.

The astronomical rise of The Force Awakens is set to continue with the film yet to be released in China. It is set to open in the world's second-biggest film market on January 9.

The film's plot follows on from the 1983 film Return of the Jedi.
