Kiwi music stars Lorde and Brooke Fraser have paid their respects to David Bowie, describing a "great musical pioneer of our time" who was "genuine, humble [and] so kind".

"Our interaction was brief but so impacting for me," Fraser wrote in a Facebook post, telling of her encounter with the rockstar when she opened for him on his Reality tour in 2004.

The Kiwi songstress had just finished her sound check at Wellington's Westpac Stadium when she saw Bowie walking towards her.

"He introduced himself and proceeded to give me some really specific feedback and encouragement.

"I arrived back in my dressing room to find flowers from him welcoming me to the tour. My impression of him was that he was an utter gentleman, genuine, humble, so kind, and as a young artist I was so blown away by this - if an artist of his status and influence had remained so down to earth and generous, then who of us could have any excuse for getting too big for our britches?"

Lorde also shared a memory of the late singer, saying when she met Bowie at a Vogue benefit gig he was different from other heroes she had met and been disappointed by.

"I'll never forget the caressing of our hands as we spoke, or the light in his eyes. That night something changed in me - I felt a calmness grow, a sureness. I think in those brief moments, he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit.

"Thank you David Bowie."
