Grease is still the word - 38 years later

It's hard to believe that it's been 38 years since Grease the movie was released.

Now, the story of Danny, Sandy and the rest of Rydell High gang is back -- and it's live.

The show stars Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical fame, Joe Jonas and Carly Rae Jepsen.

The cast weren't even born when the original Grease movie came out in 1978. But they definitely remember watching it.

"I used to sneak it when my parents were out of the house and watch it over and over and over again and mimic all the dance moves and sing along to all the songs, so for me it just reminds me of my childhood and being very naughty and mischievous which kind of fits in perfectly," Julianne Hough, who plays Sandy, says.

The production was at risk of being pulled just 24 hours before going to air.  The father of Vanessa Hudgens died of cancer the day before the live broadcast. Ms  Hudgens went ahead with the project -- dedicating the performance to her father.

The chance to share her love of theatre was a welcome distraction for Vanessa.

"I love watching live theatre and now the whole world will be able to on their TV," she says.

It was filmed at Warner Bros studios in Hollywood -- in front of live audiences at all of the sound stages to make it sound and feel like a true theatre production.

But with multiple locations, live music and singing, getting the show to air was no easy task, with a control room fitting of a major television broadcast.

As networks look for ways to provide content that makes you tune in rather than download, the live musical format appears to have been a winner.

The ratings were bigger than a pink lady's hairdo with more than 12 million Americans tuning in for the programme, making it one of the best nights for Fox in a long time.

International broadcasters took notice, with ITV in the UK and Australia's Channel 9 joining TV3 in fast tracking the show to their audiences.

Grease Live screens on TV3 at 7:30pm tonight.
