An Italian actor is in a coma after an apparent prop-malfunction resulted in his accidental hanging.
Raphael Schumacher was performing an experimental play called Mirages at Pisa's Teatro Lux when the incident took place, Italian newspaper Il Giorno reports.
Police are still investigating exactly what happened, but it's believed several prop-malfunctions occurred during a scene in which Mr Schumacher's character was being lynched.
They say Mr Schumacher should have been wearing a safety harness and the box that should have supported him was moved.
A fellow cast member said the noose was supposed to have been "fake."
Authorities aren't ruling out suicide as a possibility, however Mr Schumacher's mother says that wouldn't be the case.
"My son recently lost his father and had ended a relationship but had found his serenity again. He didn't leave a suicide note and had no reason to kill himself," she said.
An audience member told the BBC that the hooded Mr Schumacher "began trembling" during the scene so they rushed to his assistance.
Schumacher has not yet regained consciousness and remains hospitalised.
