Leo 'sure thing' for Oscar glory

Hollywood's year peaks tomorrow with the Academy Awards. But a little gloss has come off the glitzy awards this year, with protests about what some say is a lack of diversity in the nominees.

If ever there was an Oscar's sure thing, then Leo is it. This is Leonardo DiCaprio's fifth acting nomination, and he has won every big award of the season so far including the Globe, the SAG and the BAFTA.

If he doesn't mount the winners' podium at the Dolby Theatre tomorrow night it will be a Titanic upset.

The Revenant is in fact odds-on favourite across the board in the big money categories. It's the frontrunner for Best Picture, as is director Alejandro Iñarritu. And if it does, it would be a consecutive repeat for Iñarritu; he won both last year for Birdman.

So are there any cliff-hangers tomorrow night?

While Kate Winslet took out the Globe and the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs, newcomer Alicia Vikander took the SAG and has huge momentum behind her.

Best Actress too looked like a one-horse race early in awards season for Cate Blanchett in Carol, but even with that magnificent performance the favourite is Brie Larson for Room.

Undoubtedly bound to be the crowd favourite if he does win tomorrow night is Sylvester Stallone for his performance in Creed.

The blockbuster tussle of the night will be in the technical categories, as Furiosa faces off against Han Solo, Mad Max Fury Road against Star Wars: The Force Awakens, for Sound and Visual Effects.
