Catch a cab for Kiwi artist's new album

Auckland musician Cleve Cameron is releasing his first solo album, which features popular Kiwi artist, Lawrence Arabia.

But if you want to hear his new work, you'll have to call a cab.

In Mandeep Singh's taxi is the only copy of Welcome to the Primal Digital available for the public's listening pleasure.

This is the listening experience of the album -- you call Mandeep, he picks you up, you listen to a few tracks.

Mandeep does still give you a taxi ride, so you have to pay the fare.

The man behind the album is Cleve Cameron. He's part of the band Beop, but this is his first solo album.

"I take a lot of taxis and often whenever I've written a song, I'll have it on my phone and I'll play it to my driver just to see if the hook works, if it's catchy," he says.

One of those drivers was friends with Mandeep, who plays the Tabla -- an ancient form of drums.

Cameron asked Mandeep to play on his album.

"Music has become ubiquitous and downloaded and streamed. The personal experience is really important," Cameron says. "And I suppose being able to sit in a taxi and listen to the music with Mandeep, who is in the recording, is a great experience."

Mandeep says it's the first recording he's done in New Zealand.

"It's a new thing for me because I just played with my own friends and I've never done recordings in New Zealand before," he says. "It was a good thing for me."

Cameron says the album's about how the digital age is still in its early stages.

"We're in the primal days of the digital age. This is the beginning of a big era for human kind," he says. "These are songs that sum up what it means to be a human right now."

Cameron wants to recruit taxi drivers in Australia and the UK to play his album too.

The album's release date isn't being revealed yet so if you're in Auckland and want to hear all the tracks, you'll have to call Mandeep's cab.

His number is on clevecameron.com and Mandeep will take you on a musical journey.
