A who's who of the New Zealand fashion industry has descended on Dunedin for the annual iD fashion week.

There are also a lot of international visitors. One of the biggest is a Kiwi who now lives in London.

You may not have heard of Emilia Wickstead, but the Duchess of Cambridge has.

And in her handbag, you'll find a packet of Pineapple Lumps.

Wickstead says it reminds her of her Auckland childhood, and despite her mother being a fashion designer it wasn't one spent obsessing over clothes, but obsessing over art.

"I said, 'Please never ever leave me your business!'," she says.

That changed when she moved to Italy at 14.

"It was when I arrived in Milan really, that I realised that fashion was my passion, and there was something in me," Wickstead says.

She says she owes a major break to her Kiwi upbringing. At just 23 years old in London, she called up British Vogue and pretended to be her own assistant.

With a fake name, she told them to go onto their website and even spelled it out.

"She loved it," Wickstead says. "And that's when we received half a page in Vogue."

Now, she dresses superstars -- Alexa Chung, Brie Larson, Kate Bosworth and Gwyneth Paltrow, to name a few.

But the most impressive has to be the Duchess of Cambridge.

She says the two have met, and while she's not allowed to reveal much about how it all started, she does say it's a huge privilege.

"She's a fantastic ambassador for British fashion," Wickstead says.

"Not only for myself, but for other designers to be fortunate enough to dress her, it means that you're internationally recognised."

And a royal seal of approval can't hurt the business.
