Ladyhawke opens up on time away

In June, Ladyhawke will release her first album in four years.

But the Kiwi artist hasn't been taking it easy -- in fact, she's been working hard on her new music, and working hard on herself.

Now the singer, real name Pip Brown, says she's happy.

"I'm feeling confident in the studio and happy in my life as well. Stable. Healthy. Sorting myself out," she says.

But it wasn't always like this.

Brown, who now lives in LA, admits that in the four years between her albums she hit a low.

She says drinking helped take her nerves away.

"It's a relaxant. You have a drink and you feel better. Well, I did anyway."

Brown wasn't looking after herself. She was cancelling events, she felt like she couldn't get out of bed, and she hated the music she was making.

"I nearly had an album full of stuff that I never used," Brown says. "I had to stop.

"That's when I realised I wasn't feeling very good. I wasn't feeling healthy. I was feeling yuck."

In July 2014, around her 35th birthday, Brown decided things had to change.

Now she's almost two years sober and performed her first sober show last December.

"I was so nervous, especially before the show," Brown says. "I just felt quite proud of myself after that. I walked away with a sense of achievement, like, 'Yeah, I can do this'."

Brown says her new album Wild Things is a reflection of how far she's come.

As well as sharing her new work, she wanted to share how she got here, though she says she's still struggling with one vice.

"All the burgers. I had to stop," Brown admits.

"I'm only allowed to have one burger a month now."

She says she's excited to be home for Auckland City Limits this weekend, and one sneaky burger to celebrate won't hurt.
