Reese Witherspoon is mourning the loss of her Legally Blonde chihuahua co-star Moonie.

Moonie the dog starred alongside Reese as Bruiser Woods in the 2001 film. He passed away on Thursday at the age of 18.

"With a sad heart, I have to let all the #LegallyBlonde fans know that Bruiser Woods (also known as Moonie) passed away yesterday," Reese wrote on Instagram.com on Friday. "He was a sweet little chihuahua who was very loved. I will never forget all the days we spent together ... I'm sure his tail is wagging in the sky. Sending love to his trainer, the wonderful @tailsticks #RIPBruiser."

Moonie was a rescue dog before shooting to fame in the movie as the pampered pup, who was always dressed in pink.

He reunited with Reese in 2010 when she was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and during her acceptance speech, the Walk The Line star made sure to give her furry friend a special shout out and thank him for attending.

"My very, very famous co-star Bruiser - I mean, he came all the way out of his kennel," Reese said as she delivered her message of thanks. "He's a very busy working dog and he managed to show up today."

The pair also posed for photos together next to her sidewalk plaque, and Moonie's trainer, Sue Chip, shared one of the old snaps in her own Instagram tribute on Thursday.

"On this day - a day of 'throwbacks' I give you one of the greatest little dogs...'Moonie' of Legally Blonde fame," she captioned the image. "I'm sad to say that this morning in Los Angeles he left us. He was a whopping 18 years old. I remember the day I brought him home as a puppy."
