New theatre show takes to the streets

A new play has opened at Auckland's Basement Theatre -- at least, that's where it starts off.

Growing up, it's likely you've been warned never to get into a stranger's car, but to see the show Car you'll have to do just that.

In Car, you're chauffeured around Auckland city as a storyline unfolds inside and outside the car.

The driver is the show's creator, Virginia Frankovich.

"I really wanted to try out an idea I had of taking cars on a journey around Auckland city and making people see the city in a different light," she says.

Frankovich says the show explores the Kiwi urge of wanting to leave and explore the world.

Car plays two times a day until mid-March.

There are only two cars, so Frankovich can only sell six seats each night.

"I was really interested in the intimacy of the car and there just being three seats," she says.

It's very limited seating for a show unlike any other.
