Bristly band The Beard's final farewell

Australian comedy folk-rock band The Beards is touring the country with their passionate odes to facial fuzz.

But when a freshly-shaven reporter went to find out where their passion grew from, things got a bit bristly.

"That's the sort of question a man without a beard would ask. It's hard for a man who looks so disgraceful as yourself to understand," lead singer Johann Beardraven said.

The Beards are crazy about facial hair. We tried to do a serious interview, but every answer was somehow brought back to beards.

In fact, they said the word "beard' 151 times in our 20-minute chat.

The Adelaide locals got together in 2005 after a very simple realisation -- they all had beards.

"We thought to ourselves, 'Beards, beards are pretty good and the public needs to know'," Beardraven said. "So we started writing songs about beards."

They've written 56 songs about beards -- their most famous 'You Should Consider Having Sex With A Bearded Man', and the equally provocative 'If Your Dad Doesn't Have A Beard You've Got Two Mums'.

"We heard there was a guy whose dad didn't have a beard and so we set about insulting him the only way we knew how -- through the power of song," Beardraven explained.

Beardraven said beards are very "in" right now and they're taking the credit.

"That was us. We told people to grow beards, they did, so mission accomplished. You're welcome."

They've performed around the world for years but now they're calling it quits with their farewell tour, wrapping up in Adelaide in late October.

"Basically we set out 11 years ago to make the world a far beardier place, and we feel that, through music, we have achieved that goal," guitarist Nathaniel Beard said.

And that's probably enough about beards for a lifetime.
