Josh Groban on balancing humour and goosebumps

Josh Groban kind of has two personas.

He's a serious musician with a moving voice that mothers and grandmothers adore.

But he's also the funny guy who makes cheeky cameos and has a strong twitter game.

The same voice that delivers the incredibly moving 'You Raise Me Up' can also mimic Stewie Griffin off Family Guy.

And that's the thing about Groban -- he embraces seriousness and silliness in equal parts.

"As I've gone on in my career I've become less precious about showing both sides of myself," he says.

"When you start this business and sing this serious music, sometimes you're very protective that the image of your music is kind of 360 degrees."

Groban says he enjoys just being himself -- that kooky personality formed in his early teens when he was a self-confessed music nerd.

"I got picked on, so my way of blocking myself from that was through humour. So I was always the class clown. I was always trying to make people laugh."

And he still is -- in a number of popular TV cameos and skits.

"I got to sing Kanye's [West] tweets once. First of all I was terrified he wouldn't get the joke! Jimmy Kimmel, who had me do it, played it to him and he laughed and I was like, 'Phew!'."

Groban is a multi-platinum artist who has sold more than 25 million records worldwide.

He says his style of operatic pop is fate.

"When I write music and make music, no matter how much I try to push and pull, I always end up landing right where I'm supposed to be. It's the goosebumps test."

Groban's next mission -- his first Broadway show.

"It was my major in college," he says. "Before I got signed, I was studying musical theatre. That was my dream."

Until then, he's hoping he'll give Kiwis some goosebumps of their own in tomorrow's Vector Arena show.
