US singer Prince has been rushed to hospital after his jet made an emergency landing in Illinois.

Prince's private plane landed at Quad City International Airport in Moline just after 1am Friday morning (local time). Prince was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, according to TMZ.

A spokesperson for Prince has since told TMZ the singer had been battling a cold for several weeks, and cancelled two shows earlier in the month.

However the spokesperson says Prince wanted to perform in Atlanta on Thursday despite still not feeling well.

After the show he got on the plane but felt worse, so he made an emergency landing to be treated in hospital.

He was released three hours later and is now back home.

The 'Purple Rain' singer had performed Thursday night (local time) in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre.

He was in the air for a short time before the unscheduled landing.
