Young ballet dancers vie for Billy Elliot role

Billy Elliot is the story of a boy who aspires to dance.

It's a dream shared by the 17 young boys vying to be part of New Zealand's very first Billy Elliot musical.

They're going through a strenuous audition process this weekend, but say playing the role won't require a lot of acting because they can relate so much to his life already.

By the end of the weekend it's hoped that out of the 17 talented boys, six will be chosen to play Billy Elliot in Auckland Theatre Company's production of the musical at their new waterfront theatre this October.

Three will play Billy and the other three, his best friend Michael.

The youngest of the group is Lucas, who's only nine.

"The dancing and singing acting but also the swearing. It's quite fun!"

Most of the boys have experience with acting gigs but say this is different because Billy's story is similar to their own they all want to pursue dancing seriously.
