Xbox and PlayStation both announced new gaming consoles on the media briefing day of E3 2016, ahead of the expo kicking off.
Not one but two new Xbox consoles were announced, less than three years after the Xbox One was released.
The Xbox One S and Project Scorpio were the standouts at the Microsoft media event, which made clearer the company's shift in focus from entertainment and media back to videogames -- promising a future in which Xbox games can be played on a console, a computer or a mobile device.
Project Scorpio will be released late next year. It will be an enhanced version of the Xbox One that is capable of running 4K-native games and supporting high-end virtual reality (VR) experiences, with an impressive six teraflops of power.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer insists the new console is much more than a simple refresh, which is how one could describe the Xbox One S.
Set for release in August, the S is simply a thinner and smaller One with a larger hard drive, a slick paint job and a handful of small internal improvements.
All three versions of the Xbox One will be able to play the same software library, although playing them on the Scorpio will mean many games are improved because of the more powerful hardware.
The PlayStation 4 Neo, or PS4.5 as it has also been referred to, will offer improved graphics and support for 4K resolution and support Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray discs, Sony announced.
The new console won't be on display at E3 and no indication of a release window or price was given, except for saying it will cost more than the existing PS4.
Rather than talk about the Neo at its media briefing, PlayStation instead focussed on the VR capabilities of its existing console, boasting it'll release 50 VR titles before the end of the year.
Along with the hardware announcements, Xbox and PlayStation both revealed a lot about their upcoming software line-ups, adding to what has been shown off by Electronic Arts (EA), Bethesda and Ubisoft.
Among the more hyped videos released so far are Hideo Kojima's new game Death Stranding, new Star Wars titles from EA, Resident Evil 7, a VR version of Fallout 4, Watch Dogs 2, the new Call of Duty and Battlefield games, a VR Batman game, zombie games Days Gone and Dead Rising 4, new God of War and Gears of War games, Titanfall 2 and a new Quake game.
