US actress Gillian Anderson is the latest high-profile celebrity to join the TV-series adaptation of award-winning novel American Gods.
The former X-Files actress has signed on to guest appear in the role of the god of Media and began filming on set this week.
The show follows the plot of the Neil Gaiman novel where Shadow (Ricky Whittle) finds himself involved in an agenda to recruit gods.
In the fantasy world, gods exist because they are believed in, and as humanity has progressed the gods have changed.
Old gods based on mythology have been weakened, with the consciousness of the masses becoming more focused on technology, media, celebrity and drugs.
This is what the new gods are born from, and the old gods must fight the new -- something they aren't necessarily willing to do.
Media serves as a conduit for the new gods to reach the public. She lives off the attention of others, is constantly present and able to take on various forms.
Anderson will join a cast that already includes Ian McShane, Emily Browning, Peter Stormare, Pablo Schreiber and Cloris Leachman.
Filming is being held in Toronto Canada. American Gods will hit screens in 2016.
