Just ahead of the release of Star Trek Beyond, its sequel has already been announced.

The yet to be named fourth film in the rebooted Star Trek franchise will see Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as Captain James Kirk's father, who featured just briefly in the 2009 film's prologue.

Hemsworth's character died during his short appearance in the first film, suggesting time travel will feature in this sequel. While Chris Pine - who was being born at the time of the death - is set to star as Captain James Kirk in the fourth film.

Hemsworth and Pine are expected to be joined by other returning cast members Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg.

Anton Yelchin, who played Checkov in the first three films, died tragically in a motor accident recently. There is no official word on what this means for the character in future films.

Star Trek Beyond opens in New Zealand cinemas on Thursday.
