Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates review

Zac Efron and Adam Devine in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Zac Efron and Adam Devine in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

According to the title of this film, Mike and Dave need wedding dates.

I wish it was that simple.

Following Bad Neighbours and Dirty Grandpa, Zac Efron continues his foray into the R-rated and the B-rated - although in this case, B-rated would be a gargantuan compliment.

Efron plays Dave and alongside him is comedian Adam Devine as Mike. The wedding dates they need must be 'nice' girls to take to their sister's wedding.

So they turn to the internet.

Who wins the wedding date lottery with Mike and Dave?  Two very talented women who have no business being here.

Oscar nominee (!) Anna Kendrick and rising star Aubrey Plaza star as Alice and Tatiana respectively. They're not actually 'nice' girls, but will pretend to be for a free holiday in Hawaii.

It's rated R16 for sex scenes, nudity, drug use and offensive language and I'd love to use the R-rating as an excuse for not showing you the best bits - but the reality is there just are no best bits.

Even the usually reliable end credits blooper reel couldn't bring me any comedy solace.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is phenomenally unfunny and in the most turgid, clichéd and try-hard of ways.

This is my firm favourite for the worst movie of the year so far, and by a country mile.

Half a star.
