Team Tickled are "very excited" after the documentary made the The Guardian's early picks for the best documentary Oscar.
Directed by Dylan Reeve and David Farrier, the film is a dark exploration of "competitive endurance tickling".
"It's been a very outrageous and strange journey, so this seems like another outrageous and strange thing," says Farrier.
"But let's be realistic here - it basically means someone thinks we might get on a list of some kind. A long list. You can't get too excited about lists!"
The strange world explored in Ticked has continued to play out as the film screens across the US.
The team have been threatened with several lawsuits, and a person heavily featured in the film turned up to a screening in Los Angeles, confronting Mr Reeve during a Q&A and continuing the confrontation outside the theatre.
Tickled is listed alongside ESPN documentary OJ: Made in America and Risk, a documentary looking at WikiLeaks founder Julilan Assange. Risk is directed by Laura Poitras, who won an Oscar for her 2014 work, CitizenFour.
