The parents of Anton Yelchin will file a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler after the actor was killed when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards down his driveway, pinning him against a brick wall.
Yelchin was found by a friend, concerned that he hadn't shown up to a rehearsal earlier in the evening.
The 27-year-old Star Trek actor's vehicle was under recall following complaints about the car's gear shift. Many drivers had believed the car was in park when it was actually in neutral, leading to several rollaway crashes.
Two-hundred-sixty-six of the nearly 700 complaints made to the US' National Highway Traffic Safety Administration involved accidents, of which 68 caused injuries.
Yelchin's accident is believed to be the only fatality related to the fault.
Yelchin's parents, Viktor and Irina, are expected to file a suit against Fiat Chrysler and the gear shift's manufacturers, AutoNation and ZF North America.
Russian-born Yelchin is best-known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek movie series, alongside Kiwi actor Karl Urban. Star Trek Beyond, the next film in the franchise, was released this month.
Yelchin also starred in Terminator Salvation, Alpha Dog, The Smurfs, Taken. He was also in Green Room, which played at the 2016 New Zealand International Film Festival.
