Kiwi actor and comedian Pio Terei's son has died after a long battle with cancer.

Teina Terei, 17, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday morning at Auckland Hospital after suffering from leukaemia.

"Our mate Pio's young fella passed away in his sleep last night," wrote friend Roy Taoho on Facebook. "Sending love your way my mate, Pio. Love to you and your whanau. Moe mai Teina. Saddest news!"

The death of the year 13 St Peter's College student has left his school's community devastated.

"[There were] very upset boys and teachers this morning," principal James Bentley told Fairfax Media.

Mr Bentley said Teina was an outgoing young man who was well liked by students and staff.

Teina had suffered from leukaemia for around 18 months, but continued his studies while receiving treatment.

The school held a mass on Wednesday to remember him and provide support for friends.

"We're a close-knit community, and we will get through this together," said Mr Bentley.

Pio Terei is best known for his show, Pio!, and his role in comedy The Life and Times of Te Tutu.

He was awarded the New Zealanded Order of Merit in 2012 for his services to entertainment.
