Jason Bourne is making people nauseous in China

Matt Damon's latest Bourne offering, Jason Bourne, is causing a stir in China as 3D renditions are leaving viewers feeling sick and nauseous.

Angry viewers are staging protests and taking to social media, saying the 3D version of the film, matched with director Paul Greengrass' violent, shaky-cam cinematography, left them feeling dizzy.

Posters on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform similar to Twitter, reported fellow viewers vomiting in theatre bathrooms after screenings.

"There were a line of people throwing up in the restroom of the cinema I went to yesterday… I'm not exaggerating," wrote one user in a post.

Moviegoers are complaining that they are short of other options. In Beijing, just eight of the city's 149 theatres are offering 2D screenings of Bourne.

Though only available in 2D for European audiences, Bourne was converted into 3D in post-production and this version was released to the China market.

Conversion to 3D is a common practice to boost ticket sales, with Bourne making about NZ$15 million on its opening day in China.

China’s branch of Universal Pictures addressed the backlash with a statement on Weibo, saying they are working to offer more 2D screenings to meet audiences' "diversified movie-going needs."
