Sir Ian McKellen has turned down $2 million to officiate a billionaire's wedding dressed as his Lord of the Rings character Gandalf.

The 77-year-old was allegedly offered the money by Napster founder Sean Parker, who was also the founding president of Facebook.

Sir Ian turned down the opportunity to reprise his famous role, telling Parker "Gandalf doesn't do weddings".

He later said he doesn't "go dressing up, except in plays and things".

The wedding is believed to have been a fairly spectacular affair without the grey-haired wizard, with a nearly three metre tall cake, a flock of bunnies, and custom-made costumes created for his guests all a feature of the ceremony.
