Chris Evans has announced he is leaving his role as a presenter on BBC Two's Top Gear after one series.

He made the announcement on Twitter at 2:30am on Tuesday (NZ time): "Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough."

Since the departure of former host Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear has been plagued by negative reviews and low ratings, culminating in Evans' exit.

The 50-year-old is likely to be the only one leaving. Reports say his co-hosts will remain on the show.

It's also emerged that police are investigating claims of sexual assault against Evans, stemming from an incident in the 1990s.
