The internet is not happy about a Moana costume thought to be mocking Pacific Island culture.

The Disney costume is a full length outfit which has brown legs and arms covered with tattoos, a grass skirt and padding for "mighty stature", according to the description.

It is based on the character of Maui, who is voiced by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in the upcoming film.

Disney has been accused of cultural appropriation for the costume, which is available on their online store.

A Human Rights Commission spokesperson told Fairfax New Zealand it was important Disney listened to those concerns.

"Right now Polynesian people from across the Pacific region are voicing their views about this costume and it's their voices that are important right now," they said.

"We hope Disney listens to the views of the communities and people whose cultures their movie is based upon."
