US hip-hop artist Lil Wayne has posted a series of tweets suggesting he may be on his way out of the rap game.

The 33-year-old, who released his first album 17 years ago, took to Twitter to tell his fans that he was "mentally defeated" and planned to "leave gracefully".

Lil Wayne refused to clarify whether his tweets meant he would stop making music, but later said he was fine after his fans expressed concerns that he was suicidal.

In a radio interview with Hot 97 in 2011, Lil Wayne said he planned on retiring from music at the age of 35 because he had four children and wanted to be present at "such a vital point in their lives".

Just two years ago the New Orleans rapper said Tha Carter V would be his final album.

A number of fellow artists - including the likes of hip-hop heavy-hitters Missy Elliott, Chance the Rapper and Lupe Fiasco - have since sent the rap star messages of support.
