Pebbles Hooper unrepentant over Matafeo, Goebel attacks

Following her Twitter feud with comedian Rose Matafeo, social media provocateur Pebbles Hooper has faced a nasty backlash - but she stands by her comments.

The daughter of fashion designers Francis Hooper and Denise L'Estrange-Corbet has shared some of the abusive messages she claims to have received, including threats of violence and being told to kill herself.

The controversy started with Hooper criticising a Pasifika-themed dress celebrated Kiwi dance choreographer Paris Goebel wore to the MTV Video Music Awards, which Matafeo responded to by asking how Hooper is still "low key racist".

"She wanted to make a war about something that wasn't existent before that," says Hooper.

"It's human nature to jump on a bandwagon, social media makes it very easy."

After receiving Matafeo's tweet, the former NZ Herald writer fired back with a slew of abusive, expletive-ridden statements, before receiving similar treatment herself from other users online.

Hooper isn't backing down from her comments about the dress or the Funny Girls star being a "f**king leach (sic)".

"You can't sit there and throw comments like that out, and then backtrack and say 'ooh I don't follow you and I have no idea what you're doing with your life' and blah blah blah," she tells Newshub.

"She watches all my Snapchats, she clearly looks at my Twitter and lets it get her heated enough to throw comments like that. If she felt a certain way she could've just called me."

In one of the more problematic tweets Hooper published, she said she would direct future comments at "Asians and Caucasians" to save herself from "the Matafeos"; and she's not apologising.

"Well obviously that's a dig at the fact that she's alluding to my comments being racist. She's saying I can't comment on any culture other than my own, because if I do, it labels me a racist, which is probably the most ignorant thing anyone could ever say."

Hooper achieved notoriety last year by ridiculing a recently deceased Ashburton mother and her three young children. Amid the ensuing outcry, she lost her job as the co-editor of New Zealand Herald gossip column Spy, and briefly deactivated her Twitter account.

However, she has since resurrected it and acquired nearly 7000 followers, often using it to rile people up the wrong way.

"If people choose to seek out my social media, that's their choice, I'm not making them do that," says Hooper.

Matafeo responded to some of Hooper's tweets to qualify her position and also stated it was "a lil cheeky joke".

Later, after leaving Twitter for a few hours as Hooper's attacks intensified, the award-winning comedian returned with a humorous gif:
