Pop star Selena Gomez has cancelled many dates of her upcoming tour to focus on her battle against lupus disease.

The 'Come & Get It' singer was embarking on her Revival tour, but refunds are now being offered for shows in the UK, Ireland, Italy and Canada that have been pulled.

In an emotional statement to her fans, Gomez explains why she's had to quit the shows and says she hopes her battle will help others.

"As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges," says Gomez.

"Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."

The promoters of the cancelled Canadian concerts stated they were "standing with [Gomez] on the decision to put her health first."
