Bruce Campbell on cool Kiwis and Ash vs Evil Dead's return

Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams

Fans of Sam Raimi's blood-drenched TV show Ash vs Evil Dead are finally able to sink their teeth into the second season, which has just splattered screens here.

The series is shot right here in New Zealand, which nicely doubles as Elk Grove Michigan, hometown of titular antihero Ash Williams.

Bruce Campbell's cult status is legendary and meeting him, it makes total sense - the man is one of a kind.

But for a figure renowned for chopping deadites to bits with a chainsaw and a shotgun, he loves Kiwis for a somewhat surprising reason.

"In New Zealand, nobody cares about anything - if [people see me on the street and] know who you are, there won't be any indication. It'll be maybe a whisper - 'Do I know that guy? What have you been in? I know that you've been in stuff!' They're much more polite here," says Campbell.

Despite the army of fans Campbell has with his Evil Dead films, he says they originally weren't a hit at all.

"The Evil Dead movies didn't hit right away. They festered like a boil. They grew slowly and incrementally. But the people who liked it, they really, really liked it," he says.

"No US company distributor would take it - then it did really well overseas. So then they were like, 'Hey, we've always liked that movie' - after we proved it made money. It's like getting bank loan; you can't get a bank loan unless you prove to the bank you don't need a bank loan."

Evil Dead's success has come a long way since 1981, with the new TV series scoring the same critical acclaim as that of the most highfalutin, award-winning shows out there.

"We got to 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes - House of Cards gets 98 percent, too. So, Kevin Spacey - watch it buddy! We're coming," laughs Campbell.

Ash vs Evil Dead's has just kicked off again here and to make the Ash vs Frank Underwood showdown even more interesting, season two is currently certified 100 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Spacey, watch your back.
